Some excerpts from Evocations of my Past   Leave a comment

My mother did not resort to the hougan or mambo, the voodoo priest or priestess, when her commerce declined.  She was not involved with the sorcery aspects of voodoo and never went to the bokor or sorcerer.  She did not go to them for protection, or to become rich nor for any other reason people seek their help or know-how for.  She kept her distance and honored God only.

(Page7)

So had vanished from my life, my father, my best friend and God, my heavenly protector, all who kept me feeling secure and who allowed me to go through the necessary stages of life and develop into a healthy adolescent and adult. And, although I made friends again, I remained vulnerable and sensitive to the loss of loved ones, unable to pull myself together after heartbreaks and always longing for steady, never-ending relationships. (Page 22).

A QUOTE BY PAUL LAMBERMONT ON EVOCATIONS OF MY PAST.   Leave a comment

“READING EVOCATIONS OF MY PAST HELPED ME TO UNDERSTAND A GREAT DEAL ABOUT GROWING-UP IN HAITI, ABOUT THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF HAITI, AND SHED A VALUABLE LIGHT ON THE EXPERIENCES OF IMMIGRATION.”

Kreyon Bondye Pa Gen Gom. (God’s pencil has no eraser)
Haitian proverb

When Maryse Noel Roumain decided to write about her childhood and adolescence in Haiti during the 1950s and 1960s, the term evocation guided her. She uses sensory details to create a vivid picture of life and culture of her youth. Beginning with her First Communion at age seven, the sights, smells, and sounds of her childhood are used to describe a vivid picture of that day and those that followed. Within these pages, she explores her growing relationship to her family, her community and her spirituality in rich detail and emotion.
In Haiti, history, culture, religion, and politics are interwoven into the basic fabric of life, and that rich amalgamation of influences shaped her and inspired her. She lived through the terrors and privations of the Duvalier era, a period of history that left its mark on millions of Haitians. Of he middle-class Haitian Diaspora, she says: “We love and are attached to our country of birth and should remain in it to have our life and contribute.”
Later in life, she chose to leaver her island home behind and venture out into the bigger world, in search of an education – and herself. Her journey took her to Paris, when she studies at the Sorbonne, and eventually to New York City where she earned a doctorate in Psychology. She immersed herself in the cultural diversity of New York City never forgetting or denying her Haitian identity and Heritage.

Quelques mots sur l’auteur   Leave a comment

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
MARYSE ROUMAIN, a Doctor of Psychology and author, has more than 20 years of experience in various fields of activities that include: Education, Research, Politics and Publishing. She likes music, cooking and work.
She began her present involvement in publishing and marketing by writing a doctoral dissertation on the cognitive and language development of children and, subsequently by publishing a scientific book L’ENFANT HAITIEN ET LE BILINGUISME under the sponsorship of CIDHICA and DESCHAMPS based in Montreal and Haiti. In 2011, she published the first volume of her autobiography – EVOCATIONS OF MY PAST – of which the museum educator PAUL LAMBERMONT wrote: “reading EVOCATIONS OF MY PAST made me to understand a great deal about growing up in Haiti, about the history and culture of Haiti and shed a valuable light on the experiences of immigration.”
In 2012 the author wrote and published, ANACAONA, AYITI’S TAINO QUEEN, ANACAONA, LA REINE TAINO D’HAITI, a bilingual English/French book, beautifully illustrated, that retraces the Taino civilization in 15th century Haiti and the story of the Taino Queen and Cacikea, Anacaona, who struggled to maintain her people’s culture and independence but was violently put to death by the Spanish conquistadores. She also published in the same year the second volume of her autobiography, in French, EVOCATIONS DE MON PASSE, 2. In that book, she recounts her life in New York and Paris where she was a student at the Sorbonne and a participant with other Haitian immigrants in France to the study of Haitian politics. There began her participation in community activity for better conditions of life for poor Haitians and a quest for democracy in Haiti. Maryse Roumain also published two political essays HAITI: UNE TRANSITION BLOQUEE and HAITI: WHY PLURALISM IS AN IMPERATIVE. She is presently working on another book on the Haitian immigrant experience as well as the translation of Haitian folktales.
Maryse acknowledges the presence of God in her life saying: “God is my protector and he inspires me. I wouldn’t have accomplished all I have without God’s help. I like to assist him in making this world a better world”.
